Deep among the damp, sprawling branches of an ancient forest, a tiny shadow no larger than a pigeon moves with astonishing speed and agility.

At a glance, it might easily be mistaken for a harmless modern bird, but a closer look reveals sharp, piercing eyes and powerful curved claws hiding a ruthless, predatory nature.


This remarkable creature is Microraptor, a fascinating fossil dinosaur that completely shattered the traditional boundaries between dinosaurs and birds.

It all began in December 2000 in the remote badlands of Liaoning Province, China, when local farmers and fossil hunters unearthed a remarkably pristine slab of stone containing an impossibly delicate, feathered skeleton.
